Uzbekistan Visa Guide 2026: Do You Need One?

Visa-free, e-visa, or consular visa โ€” a plain-language guide to how Uzbekistan's entry system works, and exactly where to check what applies to you.

The three ways to enter Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has steadily opened up to tourism over the past several years, and most visitors now fall into one of three categories: citizens of certain countries who need no visa at all, citizens who can apply for an e-visa online in a couple of days, and everyone else, who applies for a consular visa in the normal way through an embassy or consulate. Which category you're in depends entirely on your passport's nationality.

Visa-free entry

Uzbekistan currently allows visa-free entry to citizens of more than 90 countries. The details vary by nationality: citizens of CIS countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine) can generally stay up to 60 days, while a longer list of other countries โ€” including much of the EU โ€” can enter visa-free for stays of up to 30 days. There's also a 5-day visa-free transit option for travelers connecting through Uzbekistan's international airports on select onward flights.

If your country is on the visa-free list, you don't need to do anything in advance beyond making sure your passport has enough validity remaining โ€” just show up with your passport.

The e-visa

If you're not on the visa-free list, the next check is whether your country is eligible for Uzbekistan's e-visa. This covers a large group of nationalities, including the United States and Canada, and is by far the most common route for travelers from outside the immediate region. The e-visa is applied for entirely online โ€” no embassy visit required โ€” and is linked electronically to your passport.

How to apply for the e-visa

Applications go through the official government portal, e-visa.gov.uz. As a general guide:

Apply a little earlier than you think you need to โ€” processing is usually quick, but it's not designed for last-minute departures.

Consular visa

If your nationality isn't covered by either of the above, you'll need to apply for a standard visa through an Uzbek embassy or consulate before you travel. Requirements and processing times vary by country, so it's worth contacting your nearest Uzbek diplomatic mission directly once you have your itinerary.

What to expect on arrival

Immigration in Uzbekistan is generally straightforward for tourists. Keep a printed or digital copy of your e-visa approval handy, along with your hotel booking confirmation. Uzbekistan requires foreign visitors to carry their passport at all times during their stay โ€” it's a legal requirement, not just good practice, so don't leave it locked in your hotel room during day trips.

Always check the official source before you book

Visa policy is one of the few things in travel planning that genuinely changes from year to year โ€” Uzbekistan has expanded its visa-free and e-visa lists several times in recent years, and could do so again. Before booking flights, confirm your specific nationality's current requirement directly at e-visa.gov.uz, or check with your nearest Uzbek embassy. This page will give you the shape of the system, but the portal is the source of truth for your passport specifically.
