Ellik-Qala, the desert that remembers everything

North of Khiva, where the irrigated fields of the Amu Darya delta give way to the Kyzylkum desert, the ancient rulers of Khorezm built a chain of clay-walled fortresses to guard their kingdom from nomadic raiders and rival powers. Locals call this region Ellik-Qala — "the fifty fortresses" — though modern archaeologists have counted far more than fifty ruins scattered across the sand.

Some were royal capitals with palaces and archives. Others were simple watchtowers, built to catch the first sign of dust on the horizon. Together they trace two thousand years of Khorezmian history, from the Kushan era through the Khorezmshah dynasty, long before Khiva itself became the region's capital.

Most travelers see these ruins from a car window, dropped off with no explanation of what they're looking at. We built Khiva Fortress Tours to change that — with guides who know the region's history as well as its roads.

One road, four fortresses, two millennia

Every tour follows roughly the same desert route out of Khiva — what changes is how far you go, and how long you stay. Here is the ground you'll cover.

Toprak-Kala

"Clay Fortress" · Khorezm capital

Once a walled palace-city nearly 350 by 500 metres, and the administrative heart of Khorezm under the Kushan era. Excavated from 1938 by Soviet archaeologist Sergei Tolstov, revealing palace halls, temples and some of the region's oldest written records.

Kyzyl-Kala

"Red Fortress" · Garrison outpost

A compact garrison fortress dating to the 1st–4th centuries CE, thought to have formed part of Toprak-Kala's outer defensive ring. Local legend speaks of a hidden passage once connecting the two sites.

Ayaz-Kala

"Fortress of the Wind" · Hilltop stronghold

Three linked fortress complexes on a desert ridge, built in stages from the 4th century BCE to the 7th century CE. Walls up to ten metres still stand, with views across the Kyzylkum desert and Ayaz Lake below.

Guldursun-Kala

12th-century garrison · One of the largest in Khorezm

A sprawling fortified site on the return route, with roughly a kilometre of perimeter walls still standing — arrow slits and merlons intact. Held out until the Mongol conquest under Muhammad II of Khwarazm.

Three ways into the desert

All tours depart from Khiva by air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide, bottled water and stops built in for shade, photos and rest — not just a driver dropping you at each gate.

We grew up in Khorezm. This is our history to tell.

01

A historian, not just a driver

Many desert tours are transport only — a driver with little English and no context for what you're seeing. Our guides are trained in the region's history and speak with you along the whole route.

02

Small groups, real comfort

Air-conditioned vehicles, planned shade and water stops, and honest timing — if we say eight hours, we mean eight hours of experience, not driving.

03

Transparent pricing

What you're quoted is what you pay. Entrance fees and any optional extras are flagged clearly before you book, not discovered at the gate.

04

Planning your visit

Best season

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) bring the mildest desert temperatures. Summer is intensely hot; winter brings cold winds — both manageable with the right clothing.

What to bring

Comfortable closed shoes for uneven, rocky ground, a hat and sunscreen, a light jacket for cooler mornings, and a camera — the desert light here is extraordinary.

Fitness level

Moderate. Reaching the top of Ayaz-Kala involves an uphill walk over loose ground. Toprak-Kala and Kyzyl-Kala are gentler, mostly flat walking.

Good to know

Recommended for ages 6 and up. Not wheelchair accessible. Private tours and custom itineraries — including combining with Bukhara or the Aral Sea — available on request.

Three steps, no guesswork

No account, no upfront payment to ask a question — just tell us what you want and we take it from there.

No. Sending a message costs nothing and doesn't commit you to anything. We only ask for a deposit once you're ready to confirm a date.

How do I pay, and is a deposit required?

Once we confirm your date, we ask for your details via Payoneer to hold the booking, with the remaining balance payable in cash on the day of your tour. No payment is needed to enquire.

Yes — once your date and price are agreed, we send written confirmation with pickup time, location and your guide's contact details.

This is a booking request, not an online payment — we confirm availability and reply within 24 hours before anything is finalized.
