Ellik-Qala: The Desert That Remembers Everything
North of Khiva, where the irrigated fields of the Amu Darya delta give way to the Kyzylkum desert, ancient rulers built a chain of clay-walled fortresses to guard their kingdom. Locals call this region Ellik-Qala — "the fifty fortresses." Our guides are historians, not just drivers. They know the region's history as well as its roads.
We offer visits to Ayaz-Kala, Toprak-Kala, Kyzyl-Kala and Guldursun-Kala — fortresses spanning from the 4th century BCE to the 12th century CE. Beyond the desert, we also run trips to the Savitsky Museum in Nukus, private transfers to Bukhara, an overnight expedition to the Aral Sea and the Moynaq ship graveyard, walking tours of Ichan-Kala and Nurullabay Palace, and an evening at the City of Magicians desert complex.
Beyond the standard routes, we also run two things you won't find with other operators: an overnight homestay with a real Khorezm farming family (Village Life of Khiva), and a set of Author's Tours designed personally by our Khiva-born guide — sunrise inside an empty Ichan-Kala before the gates open, the mahallas most tourists never see, and more.

Bakhram grew up in Khiva and has been guiding travelers through the fortresses, mahallas, and villages of Khorezm since 2014. These Author's Tours are the trips he'd actually recommend to a friend — not the standard route, but the Khiva he knows.
Khiva already has its standard monument route — Kalta Minor, Kunya Ark, Tash Hauli. These are the experiences I designed myself.
